Introduction
The African Mycological Association was founded in 1995 during the third African Mycology
Conference (RMC3) in Harare, Zimbabwe. However, its roots (mycelia ?) date back to the second
International Mycology Congress (IMC2) in Tampa when the idea of developing mycology in
Africa was initially proposed.
In 1987 CODMA (Committee for the Development of Mycology in Africa) was launched and in
1990 the first African Mycology Conference (RMC1) was held in Reduit, Mauritius. In 1992,
the second Regional Mycology Conference (RMC2) was held in Egypt and the idea of an
African Mycological Association (AMA) was hatched (germinated?).
In the third Regional Mycology Conference (RMC3) in Zimbabwe 1995, CODMA was integrated
into the AMA, and thus there became one regional body responsible for developing mycology
in Africa. The last AMA organised conference was RMC4 in Kenya in 1998.
After the RMC4 RMC4 there was a period of inactivity but during the RMC 5 congress held at
Hartenbosch, South Africa, and new committee was elected at a special annual general meeting.
